Western Australian Maritime Museum

Explore the riches of Western Australia's maritime history located at three sites in Fremantle. The Western Australian Maritime Museum has unique architechure and exhibits over three locations.

Fremantle Prison

Step inside and do time at the Fremantle Prison...

The Fremantle Prison is the largest convict built structure in Western Australia. With thick limestone walls, solitary cells and gallows it is a monument to a system of punishment that occured up until recent times.

The Prison offers a range of themed tours with experienced guides. Day tours depart every 30 minutes from 10am. By night you can experience a spooky Torchlight Tour. Or, for a more extreme spin on the heritage site, explore the labyrinth of tunnels 20 meters beneath the Prison by foot and by boat. This new tour is very popular, bookings are essential.

The Round House

Celebrating 175 years in 2006, the Round House is Western Australia's oldest public building.

Built in 1831, the Round House was used to install navigation lights and a signalling station. In 1900 a time ball was installed as part of a procedure to give mariners and residents an exact daily time of 1pm.

The Fremantle Heritage Guides provide tours of the Round House precinct for visitors. Not only can you hear about the history, but enjoy sweeping views of the city, Fishing Boat Harbour, the port over Bathers Beach and the Indian Ocean.

Historic Walking Tour

A joint venture between Fremantle Historic Walking Tours and the WA Maritime Museum to offer locals and visitors the opportunity to learn more about the history, heritage, culture and art of the city. The walk takes about 1½ hours.

Fremantle Town Hall Tour

The Fremantle Town Hall was officially opened in 1887 to coincide with Queen Victoria's golden Jubilee. Take a tour of the Town Hall and find out about its fascinating history, architecture and the resident ghost! All guides are volunteers. The duration of the tour is one hour.

Rottnest Island

Only 25 minutes by ferry, Rottnest Island is a picturesque island that offers something for everyone!

Today, Rottnest Island is used primarily for leisure activities, but it does have a rich history to tell. The reefs provide divers with an abundence of beautiful corals and shipwreck to explore. The island offers the finest swimming beaches, snorkling and surfing. No cars on the island gives visitors not only a true escape from daily "hustle and bustle", but a chance to tour around the island leisurely by bicycle.
